Santa Maria del Mar is a 14th-century Catalan Gothic basilica in Barcelona’s Born/Ribera district, built between 1329 and 1383 by the shipbuilders, merchants, and dockworkers of the medieval port. Its soaring nave and octagonal columns are considered among the purest examples of the style.
A 1936 fire during the Spanish Civil War destroyed the original altar, choir, and stained glass; restoration took some 30 years. The basilica’s popularity grew further after Ildefonso Falcones’ 2006 novel “La Catedral del Mar” was set here.
