The Picasso Museum in Barcelona is housed in five adjoining medieval palaces on Carrer Montcada in the Gothic Quarter/El Born district, and holds one of the world’s most extensive collections of Pablo Picasso’s early work — more than 4,000 pieces spanning his formative years in Barcelona and Paris.
The permanent collection traces Picasso’s development from childhood drawings and academic studies through his Blue Period, with a particular strength in the series he painted based on Velázquez’s Las Meninas. Because the artist himself donated much of the collection, the museum offers unusually deep insight into his early artistic evolution rather than his later, more famous Cubist works.
The museum is closed on Mondays and caps daily visitor numbers, so booking tickets online in advance is recommended, especially in peak season.
