Potsdamer Platz is one of Berlin’s busiest public squares, rebuilt from a Cold War-era wasteland into a modern district of glass-and-steel towers after German reunification. Architect Renzo Piano led the redevelopment, working alongside Helmut Jahn, whose Sony Center anchors the plaza with its distinctive tent-shaped roof.
Traces of the square’s turbulent history remain: a marked line shows where the Berlin Wall once stood, and Europe’s first traffic light, installed here in 1924, still stands as a monument. Nearby, the Kollhoff Tower’s Panoramapunkt observation deck offers sweeping views over the city, while the Kulturforum museums and Berlin Philharmonic sit just to the south.
Visit on a weekday morning to beat the crowds, or in winter when the square transforms into a festive Winter World with Europe’s largest toboggan run.
