Royal Park Rajapruek is a large royal botanical garden in Mae Hia, on the southwestern edge of Mueang Chiang Mai District. It was created for the 2006 Royal Flora Ratchaphruek expo, which honored King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 60th year on the throne and his 80th birthday. Today, visitors come for the sweeping themed gardens, the Royal Project displays, and the mountain views across open lawns (Thai Holiday Guide).
The centerpiece is Ho Kham Luang, a gilded Lanna-style royal pavilion with tiered roofs and intricate carved woodwork, framed by formal flower beds. Beyond it, paths lead through international gardens donated by countries such as Japan and Bhutan, as well as an orchid house, bamboo and tropical plant collections, and sculptures set among water features. Trams loop the extensive grounds, which helps families with young children or older relatives. The park holds a 4.6-star rating across more than 8,000 reviews (Wander Atlas).
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
The park opens daily from 8:00 to 18:00. Hours can shift on Thai public holidays, so check ahead if you plan a holiday visit (Visit Thailand Today). Arrive at opening to get cooler temperatures and softer light, and allow about two hours (OffPeakTrip). The cool season, from November to February, brings the fullest blooms, and the park’s winter flower festival brings the biggest crowds, so weekdays are calmer. Buy a tram ticket at the entrance to save your legs. The Chiang Mai Night Safari sits close by, which makes an easy afternoon-to-evening pairing. Red songthaews and ride-hailing apps reach the park in about 20 minutes from the Old City.
