The Cinque Terre National Park protects a rugged stretch of the Ligurian coast in northern Italy, encompassing the five cliffside villages of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Covering about 15 square miles, it is Italy’s smallest national park but one of its most visited, prized for its pastel-colored houses, terraced vineyards, and dramatic sea views.
More than 100 kilometers of hiking trails link the villages and surrounding hillsides, including the famous Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail), whose scenic Via dell’Amore section between Riomaggiore and Manarola is the easiest and most popular stretch. Entry to the villages themselves is free, but hiking the marked trails between them requires a Cinque Terre Trekking Card, priced around 7.50 EUR for a single day.
Trail conditions change often due to landslides and weather, so checking the park’s official trail status before setting out is worthwhile, and a regional train connects all five villages for those who want to skip a stretch. Most visitors spend 2 to 3 days exploring the area at a relaxed pace, though a single day is enough to see one or two villages and hike a short trail section.
