Plaza Mayor de Cusco, known locally as the Plaza de Armas, has served as the ceremonial and social heart of the city since Inca times, when it was called Huacaypata (“place of weeping” in Quechua) and hosted major imperial rituals. After the Spanish conquest the square was rebuilt with colonial arcades, and the imposing Cusco Cathedral and the Church of La Compañía de Jesús now dominate its edges, sitting atop original Inca stone foundations.
At the center stands a statue of the Inca ruler Pachacuti, and the surrounding porticoes are lined with cafes, artisan shops, and travel agencies. Locals and visitors gather here for festivals, parades, and live Andean music, making it as much a living public space as a historic landmark.
The plaza itself is open around the clock and free to enter, though the Cathedral and nearby churches keep their own visiting hours. Come at dusk when the buildings are lit up, or in the morning before the tour groups arrive, for the best light and fewer crowds.
