The Danville Science Center occupies the historic Danville Passenger Rail Station at 677 Craghead Street, on the edge of the city’s River District. Open since 1995 and a partner of the Science Museum of Virginia, it draws more than 50,000 guests a year with hands-on STEM exhibits, a seasonal butterfly center, and a full-dome digital theater (source: Visit SoSi).
The campus covers two railroad-era buildings. It began in the passenger station and expanded into the neighboring Southern Railway building in 2005 (source: Virginia Association of Museums). Inside, kids work through interactive exhibits, makerspace activities, and live science demonstrations. Rotating touring exhibitions keep repeat visits fresh. In the Digital Dome Theater, films and shows are projected overhead across a curved screen. During warmer months, the butterfly center lets visitors walk among free-flying butterflies and native plants (source: Danville Science Center).
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Hours have changed in recent years, so confirm the current schedule and dome showtimes on the official hours and admission page before you go. Weekday mornings during the school year often bring field-trip groups. Weekday afternoons and weekend openings tend to be calmer. Plan your butterfly visit for late spring through early fall, when the center is in season. The station still serves Amtrak trains, so rail travelers can arrive directly on site. Afterward, walk to the Riverwalk Trail along the Dan River or explore the River District’s restaurants on Main and Craghead Streets.
