Polychrome Overlook is a wide pullout at Mile 45.8 of the Denali Park Road, about 45 miles west of the park entrance near Healy. Its draw is a sweeping drop-off view across the Plains of Murie toward the glaciated Alaska Range. Visitors should know that it has been out of reach since 2021.
After the road crosses the East Fork of the Toklat River, it climbs onto Polychrome Mountain. There, volcanic rock layers streak the slopes in rust, ochre, purple and cream. Far below, braided river channels thread across open tundra, and glaciers spill from the Alaska Range on the horizon. Grizzlies, caribou and Dall sheep often appear on the surrounding slopes. In late August 2021, the Pretty Rocks Landslide at Mile 45.4 displaced the road and cut off the overlook, along with Toklat, Eielson and Wonder Lake (NPS).
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Through the 2026 season, the Park Road remained closed at Mile 43. Buses turned around at the East Fork Bridge, even as construction of the Pretty Rocks bridge neared completion (Deep Arrival). Check the NPS Polychrome Area Plan for reopening updates before planning a 2027 trip. Private vehicles are restricted past Mile 15, so reserve transit or tour buses early for June through August. Until access returns, the East Fork area offers similar views of colorful ridges and the river flats. Morning departures usually bring better wildlife sightings and softer light for photographers.
