The Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence is best known as the home of Michelangelo’s David, the 5.17-meter marble masterpiece carved between 1501 and 1504 and moved to the gallery in 1873 to protect it from weathering. The museum also holds Michelangelo’s unfinished “Prisoners” sculptures and an important collection of Florentine Gothic and early Renaissance paintings.
The gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday, closed Mondays, with standard admission around 20 euros; a combined 48-hour ticket covering the Accademia and the Bargello museums is also available. Arriving right at opening or in the late afternoon, roughly 5-6pm, tends to mean shorter lines and a quieter view of the David in its dedicated tribune gallery.
Because the Accademia is one of Florence’s most visited sites, timed-entry or skip-the-line tickets booked in advance are strongly recommended, especially during peak season. The museum is compact compared to the nearby Uffizi, so most visits focus tightly on the David and the sculpture galleries.
