The Angermeyer Waterfront Inn is a boutique hotel on Punta Estrada, the quiet lava-rock peninsula across Academy Bay from central Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island. It was built around the legendary “cave” home of Gus Angermeyer, one of the German pioneer brothers who settled the Galápagos in the 1930s. Guests come for that heritage, the ocean views, and a private dock that links the inn to town by water taxi.
The architecture draws on Gus Angermeyer’s original approach, using lava rock and driftwood to create organic, hand-built spaces that open onto the bay. Rooms are bright and face the water. Marine iguanas often sun themselves on the rocks, and sea lions and pelicans regularly patrol the shoreline. The on-site restaurant focuses on seafood and Ecuadorian flavors, with tables set beside the water. The inn ranks #6 of 35 hotels in Puerto Ayora on Tripadvisor, based on more than 500 reviews.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Water taxis cross from Puerto Ayora’s main pier to the inn’s dock in about five minutes for roughly a dollar, and they run late into the evening. Book well ahead for mid-June through August and the December–January holidays, which are the peak periods. From December to May the weather is warm and sunny, with calmer seas for snorkeling. From June to November, cooler garúa mists set in. From the hotel you can walk to Las Grietas, a swimming spot in a rocky crevice. The Charles Darwin Research Station is a short boat ride back across the bay.
