Kanionet e Osumit, the Osum Canyons, cut roughly 26 km through limestone around Çorovodë in Albania’s Skrapar region, about 1.5 hours’ drive southeast of Berat. Protected as a natural monument and often called Albania’s Grand Canyon, the gorge draws rafters, hikers and photographers for its sheer walls, turquoise water and seasonal waterfalls.
Cliffs rise up to about 80 m above the Osum River, and in places they close in to just a few metres apart. On a spring rafting trip you pass cascades spilling down the rock and caves eroded into the walls, plus narrow chutes where the current picks up. Above the gorge, rim roads lead to viewpoints and to the bridge at Çorovodë, which looks straight down into the canyon. In summer the water drops low enough to wade and swim through sections on foot. Nearby Bogova Waterfall makes an easy add-on hike, according to Rafting Osum Canyon and Nomads Travel Guide.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Rafting depends on snowmelt and rain, so the season usually runs from March to May. Book with a licensed Çorovodë or Berat operator, which typically includes a wetsuit and transfers. From June to September, plan for canyon walks rather than boats. Weekday mornings bring the fewest crowds at the viewpoints. Wear water shoes, carry cash for local guesthouses, and drive the mountain roads in daylight. Combine the visit with an overnight stay in Berat.
