Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort is the only accommodation on Lady Elliot Island, a coral cay at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef about 80 kilometres north-east of Bundaberg, Queensland. The family-run, off-grid resort sits inside a highly protected Green Zone, and guests come for easy access to manta rays, turtles and reef sharks straight from the beach (Queensland).
The resort keeps things simple. Guests choose from units, tents and cabins designed for low impact (Lady Elliot Island), and they share a saltwater pool, BBQ and laundry facilities. The lagoon offers easy snorkelling over coral gardens. More than 1,200 marine species live in the surrounding waters. On land, nesting seabirds fill the small island with noise, and the historic lighthouse rises above the airstrip.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Light aircraft are the only way to reach the island. Flights depart from mainland hubs such as Hervey Bay and Bundaberg, and they impose strict luggage limits, so pack light and confirm your allowance before you fly. Timing your trip depends on what you want to see:
- Humpback whales: They pass the island from roughly July to October.
- Turtles: Turtles nest over the summer months, and hatchlings emerge from about January.
- Manta rays: They gather in good numbers through winter.
Room numbers are limited, so book well ahead for school holidays. If you are short on time, day-trip packages also run.
