The Istanbul Aviation Museum, also known as the Turkish Air Force Museum (Havacılık Müzesi), is a military aviation museum run by the Turkish Air Force in Yeşilköy, Bakırköy, beside the former Atatürk Airport. Aviation enthusiasts, families and history fans come for its large collection of full-size warplanes and for exhibits tracing Turkish flight from the Ottoman era to the jet age.
The museum was founded in 1971 at Çiğli Air Base in İzmir and later moved to Istanbul. Most of its decommissioned aircraft sit in an open-air park, where visitors can walk among Cold War jets, trainers, transports and helicopters that once flew with Turkish squadrons. Indoor halls hold engines, uniforms, cockpit instruments, scale models and archival photographs covering the pioneers of Turkish military aviation. Children tend to enjoy the outdoor apron most, where they can see the size of the aircraft up close. Plan on about 90 minutes for a visit.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
This is a military site, so bring a passport or national ID for the entrance check. Weekday mornings are the quietest time to visit. Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons, because summer heat makes the shadeless aircraft park tiring. Opening days and hours can change, so confirm them on the official Air Force museum site before you go. Marmaray trains stop at Yeşilköy station, about a 15-minute walk away. You can pair the visit with lunch in Yeşilköy’s seaside neighborhood.
