The Suleymaniye Mosque crowns one of Istanbul’s seven hills, standing as the grandest imperial mosque in the city. Designed by the legendary architect Sinan for Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, construction began in 1551 and finished in 1557-1558. Suleiman, the longest-reigning Ottoman sultan, was regarded by some as a second Solomon for the harmony and justice attributed to his rule, and the mosque was conceived as a monument befitting that legacy.
The mosque’s dome rises 53 meters above the floor, and its four minarets dominate the surrounding skyline, symbolizing Suleiman as the fourth sultan since the 1453 conquest of Constantinople. Inside, stained-glass windows above the mihrab, crafted by Ibrahim Sarhos, sit alongside surviving traces of original Iznik tiles and lapis lazuli pigment. The complex once included a soup kitchen, library, madrasa, and garden, and the tombs of Suleiman and his wife Hurrem Sultan remain on the grounds today, with sweeping views over the Golden Horn.
The mosque is generally open to visitors from around 9:00 am until late evening, sometimes as late as 11:00 pm in summer, though it closes briefly during the five daily prayers. Entry is free, as with any active place of worship, and modest dress is required, with headscarves provided for women who need them. Compared with the more crowded Blue Mosque, Suleymaniye rarely feels overwhelmed by tour groups, especially in the early morning.
