Wawel Royal Castle sits on a hill above the Vistula River in Kraków and is the most historically significant site in Poland, established as a fortified royal residence under King Casimir III the Great and transformed into a Renaissance palace during the Jagiellon dynasty of the 14th-16th centuries. After Poland’s capital moved to Warsaw in 1596, the complex fell into disrepair before major 20th-century restoration returned it to its current UNESCO World Heritage status.
The hilltop complex blends Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance architecture around a graceful arcaded courtyard. Highlights include Wawel Cathedral, the traditional coronation site of Polish monarchs and home to the 13-ton Sigismund Bell, the lavishly furnished Royal State Rooms with period tapestries and royal portraits, and the legendary Dragon’s Den cave beneath the hill.
Walking the grounds and admiring the exteriors and river views is free and possible in an hour, but tickets are required for the cathedral, state rooms, and other interiors. Arriving at opening time and visiting in spring or fall helps avoid the biggest crowds.
