Wawel Cathedral has served as the coronation site of Polish monarchs for centuries, and the current Gothic structure, the third cathedral built on this site, dates to the early-to-mid 1300s. Its predecessor was a wooden church erected around 1020, making Wawel Hill one of Poland’s oldest and most significant religious sites.
Inside, the Royal Crypts hold the tombs of Polish kings and national heroes, including former president Lech Kaczyński. Visitors can also climb the Sigismund Bell Tower, home to Poland’s largest historic bell, and tour the Cathedral Museum, which displays royal regalia, vestments, and religious artifacts collected over the centuries.
A basic visit to the cathedral interior takes about 30 to 45 minutes, while seeing the crypts and bell tower as well typically brings the total to 1.5 to 2 hours. The cathedral is open to visitors from 9 AM to 5 PM Monday through Saturday and from 12:30 PM on Sundays.
