Kinkaku-ji, known in English as the Golden Pavilion, is one of Kyoto’s most photographed landmarks, its top two floors sheathed entirely in gold leaf and reflected in the still waters of Kyokochi Pond below. Construction began in 1397 when the third Ashikaga shogun, Yoshimitsu, commissioned the Kitayama Palace on the site; after his death, the estate was converted into a Zen Buddhist temple in accordance with his wishes, and it remains part of the Rinzai Shokoku-ji school today.

The pavilion has faced repeated destruction over the centuries, first during the Onin War of 1467-1477, which devastated much of Kyoto, and again in 1950 when a monk set fire to the building. The structure standing today was rebuilt in 1955. Each of its three stories follows a distinct architectural style: shinden-zukuri aristocratic palace design on the first floor, buke-zukuri samurai residence style on the second, and traditional Chinese Zen architecture on the third, set within a Muromachi-period garden that helped earn the site UNESCO World Heritage status.

Kinkaku-ji is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with adult admission priced at 400 yen and children’s tickets at 300 yen. Most visitors follow a set walking path through the garden grounds that offers several distinct viewpoints of the pavilion, making a stop here a relatively quick but memorable addition to a Kyoto itinerary.
