Jemaa el-Fnaa is the vast central square and marketplace of Marrakesh’s medina, a UNESCO-recognized “Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage” that has served as the city’s social and commercial heart for centuries.
The square runs 24 hours but transforms dramatically through the day: daytime brings snake charmers, henna artists, and orange-juice stalls, while at dusk dozens of open-air food stalls fill the plaza with grilled meats, storytellers, and musicians performing traditional Gnawa music. Most fixed shops around the square open around 9:30 a.m. and stay busy into the night.
The square borders the Koutoubia Mosque and the entrance to the souks, making it a natural starting point for exploring Marrakesh. Evening is widely considered the liveliest and most atmospheric time to visit.
