The House of Tiles, or Casa de los Azulejos, is an 18th-century Baroque palace in Mexico City’s historic center, built for the Count of the Valle de Orizaba family and named for the blue-and-white Talavera tiles from Puebla that cover its facade on three sides.
Inside, the building centers on a glass-ceilinged atrium with stone pillars and a fountain, and it features a mural by the renowned Mexican painter Jose Clemente Orozco. According to local legend, the tiled facade was added to prove wrong a father’s prediction that his son would never amount to anything.
Since 1917 the ground floor has housed a Sanborns restaurant and store, so visitors can admire the historic architecture while dining on Madero Street in the city’s downtown core.
