The Mitchell Park Domes rise from Mitchell Park on Milwaukee’s near south side at 524 S Layton Blvd. They are three beehive-shaped glass conservatories that house a desert, a tropical rainforest and a rotating floral show. Designed by architect Donald Grieb and completed in the 1960s, they remain one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, and visitors come for winter warmth and botanical variety.
Each conoidal dome measures roughly 140 feet across. The Desert Dome gathers cacti, succulents and arid-land plants along paved paths. The Tropical Dome is humid and dense with palms, flowering vines and a waterfall. The Show Dome changes themes through the year, and its holiday displays featuring model trains draw rail fans and young children. The tropical and desert domes have paved pathways, while the show dome uses brick. Some grades can challenge manual wheelchair users (source: Milwaukee County).
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
For 2026, the Domes open weekdays from 9am to 5pm and weekends from 9am to 4pm, with last admission one hour before closing (source: Lake Country Family Fun). Weekday mornings are the quietest time to visit. On Wednesdays, paid admission includes a free show-themed sticker while supplies last. The Día de los Muertos celebration runs October 30, 2026, from 6 to 9pm. Parking is free year-round. However, I-94 construction and the closure of the 27th Street Viaduct affect access routes, so check the Milwaukee Domes Alliance for traffic updates before you leave.
