The PDO Planetarium is Oman’s purpose-built public astronomy theatre, located on Petroleum Development Oman’s Knowledge World campus in the Mina Al Fahal area of Muscat. Families and space fans come for free, bilingual sky shows under a digital dome (AeroVia).
Inside, 60 seats sit beneath an 11-metre dome. Programmes run in Arabic and English and cover planets, stars, galaxies, comets, astrophysics and Earth science (AeroVia). The revamped system uses Uniview visualisation software, which can fly audiences from Earth’s surface out to distant galaxies. Laser shows set to graphics and music add some theatre for younger viewers (PDO). The planetarium shares a learning campus with the Oil & Gas Exhibition Centre and the EcOman Centre, both earlier PDO gifts to the nation (PDO).
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Admission is free. The planetarium is generally open Sunday through Thursday from 8am to 3pm and closes on Friday, Saturday and official holidays (Google). School groups book many weekday morning slots, so aim for late morning or early afternoon. Seating is limited, so call ahead or check PDO’s Knowledge World site to confirm show times and which language a session uses. Plan two to three hours to pair a show with the Oil & Gas Exhibition Centre next door. A taxi or car is the practical way to reach the site, and Qurum Beach and Qurum Natural Park are a short drive away.
