The Basilique du Sacre-Coeur is the striking white-domed church crowning Montmartre, Paris’s highest natural point, offering panoramic views across the city. Built between 1875 and 1914 in a Romano-Byzantine style, the basilica is famous for one of France’s largest mosaics, depicting Christ with open arms above the altar, alongside vivid stained glass and a 19-ton bell known as La Savoyarde.
Admission to the main sanctuary is free, and visitors can climb the central dome for one of the best panoramic views of Paris, taking in the Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame in the distance. The surrounding Montmartre neighborhood, with its winding streets and artists’ square, rewards a leisurely stroll before or after.
The basilica is open daily from 6:30 AM to 10:30 PM. Visit early morning or early evening, ideally on a weekday, to avoid the 10 to 15 minute entry waits that build between 10:30 AM and 5 PM, and try to skip Sundays when crowds peak.
