Porto Cathedral, known locally as the Sé do Porto, is a Romanesque-Gothic fortress-church built beginning around 1110 and is open November through March from 9am to 12:30pm and 2:30pm to 6pm, and April through October from 9am to 12:30pm and 2:30pm to 7pm.
Perched on a hilltop in Porto’s historic center, the cathedral has witnessed centuries of the city’s history, most notably the 1387 marriage of King João I to Philippa of Lancaster, an alliance that shaped Anglo-Portuguese relations for generations. Its granite facade blends Romanesque solidity with later Gothic and Baroque additions.
Entry to the main nave is free, while a small fee unlocks the Gothic cloister, treasury, and chapter house. Visitors often pair a stop here with a walk along the nearby Ribeira district and views over the Douro River.
