Speculum Alchemiae is a small, privately run alchemy museum at Haštalská 1 in Prague’s Old Town, beside the quiet Haštalské náměstí and the Gothic Church of St. Haštal. The museum occupies a historic building whose preserved underground rooms are linked by legend to alchemists of Emperor Rudolf II’s court (Prahou). Visitors come for a hands-on look at Renaissance science at the point where it still overlapped with mysticism.
Every visit is a 30-minute guided tour through three spaces: an alchemist’s workshop, a laboratory, and a set of catacombs (Speculum Alchemiae). Guides open a concealed passage behind a bookcase and lead the group down to the lab. Down there, glass flasks, distillation vessels and furnaces illustrate how practitioners pursued the “secrets of nature” and the “harmony of the spheres” (Museum of Alchemy). The guides also recount local tales of tunnels running beneath Old Town. Treat those stories as legend rather than documented history.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
The museum opens daily from 10am to 6pm, and tours depart every half hour (Speculum Alchemiae). Groups are small, so in summer and on weekends you should book a slot in advance or arrive near opening time. The underground rooms have narrow stairs and low ceilings. Náměstí Republiky metro station (Line B) is about a 10-minute walk away. You can easily pair the visit with Old Town Square or the Josefov Jewish Quarter, both close by.
