Ideal For

History Buffs Art Enthusiasts Religious Travelers

St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City is the largest church in the world and one of Christianity’s most significant sites, built over what is traditionally held to be the tomb of Saint Peter. Its soaring dome, designed by Michelangelo and completed by Giacomo della Porta, remains one of the greatest achievements of Renaissance architecture.

Inside, the basilica houses masterpieces including Michelangelo’s Pietà and Bernini’s bronze baldachin over the main altar, alongside monumental mosaics and papal tombs spanning centuries of church history. A climb of roughly 320 steps leads to the top of the dome for panoramic views over St. Peter’s Square and Rome.

Most visitors spend one to two hours exploring the basilica’s main highlights, with another 30 to 45 minutes if climbing the dome. Arriving early in the morning, shortly after the 7am opening, offers the shortest lines and the quietest atmosphere.
