Fortress Hohensalzburg is an 11th-century hilltop fortress overlooking Salzburg, Austria, begun in 1077 and expanded over the centuries into one of the largest surviving medieval castles in Europe. Most people reach the fortress via the FestungsBahn funicular, a short scenic ride departing from near the cathedral, though a footpath climb is also possible.
The fortress is open year-round, with hours running roughly 9:30 AM to 5 PM from January through April and October through December, and extending to 8:30 AM until 8 PM from May through September; the funicular generally mirrors these seasonal hours, running at 10-minute intervals. Its central location makes it an easy pairing with a walk through Salzburg’s Altstadt below.
