Sevilla Cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and one of Spain’s most important religious landmarks, built between 1401 and 1506 on the site of a former mosque. Inside, the towering nave holds the tomb of Christopher Columbus, supported by four bronze figures representing the medieval kingdoms of Spain, along with a vast gilded altarpiece considered one of the finest examples of Gothic woodcarving anywhere.
The cathedral’s bell tower, La Giralda, was originally the minaret of the 12th-century Almohad mosque and remains the city’s defining silhouette. Visitors climb a series of ramps (built for horses, not stairs) rather than steps to reach the top, where sweeping views stretch across Seville’s rooftops and the Guadalquivir River.
Most visitors spend 1.5 to 2 hours exploring the cathedral, treasury, and Giralda together. Shoulders and knees should be covered for entry, and booking tickets online in advance is recommended to skip the line, especially during peak midday hours.
