Diocletian’s Palace is a fortified Roman palace complex built at the end of the 3rd century AD as the retirement residence of Emperor Diocletian, near his hometown of Spalatum on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast. Roughly half of the vast compound was reserved for the emperor’s private use, with the rest housing a military garrison, and it stands today as the most complete surviving example of a Roman palace anywhere in the world.
Rather than becoming a ruin, the palace evolved into the living core of modern Split: its ancient walls, courtyards, and underground halls are now filled with shops, cafes, and homes, while the Peristyle square and the Cathedral of St. Domnius — built around Diocletian’s own mausoleum — remain its architectural centerpiece. UNESCO added the palace to its World Heritage List in 1979.
The palace grounds are free to enter through any of its four gates and open 24 hours, though paid attractions like the Cathedral bell tower and the Underground Halls keep their own daytime hours. Visiting between 7 and 9 a.m., before cruise-ship crowds arrive, gives the emptiest views of the Peristyle.
