The Royal Palace in Stockholm’s Gamla Stan (Old Town) is one of Europe’s largest palaces still used for its original purpose, serving as the official residence of the Swedish monarch even though the royal family lives elsewhere. Visitors can tour the Royal Apartments, the Treasury, and the Tre Kronor Museum, which traces the palace’s history back to the medieval fortress that once stood on the site.
The Royal Apartments include several distinct suites — the State Apartments, Guest Apartments, and the 14-room Bernadotte Apartments — decorated with tapestries, chandeliers, and royal portraits collected over centuries.
A daily changing-of-the-guard ceremony takes place in the outer courtyard and is free to watch even without palace tickets, making it easy to combine a quick photo stop with a longer museum visit.
