Urban Plates is a chef-driven, fast-casual restaurant at 300 W McKinley Ave in downtown Sunnyvale, a short walk from Murphy Avenue and the Sunnyvale Caltrain station. The San Diego-born chain cooks from scratch daily, and locals come here for filling, wholesome meals that arrive quickly without the shortcuts of typical fast food.
You order at a long counter where cooks build each meal in view. The signature format is the “plate”: a protein such as grilled steak, wild salmon, or chicken paired with two seasonal sides like roasted vegetables, grains, or mashed potatoes. The menu also includes chopped and composed salads, grain bowls, sandwiches, soups, and scratch-made desserts. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diners can find clearly labeled options, and calorie counts are posted. The dining room is bright and casual, with communal and two-top seating. Beer and wine are available alongside housemade lemonades and iced teas. Catering trays are also popular for office lunches in the area.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Weekday lunch from about noon to 1:15 p.m. draws a heavy tech-worker crowd, so come before 11:45 a.m. or after 1:30 p.m. for a shorter line. Early evenings tend to be calmer than weekend dinner. To skip the counter, order ahead through the Urban Plates website or app for pickup. Hours and prices can vary by location, so check before you go. Caltrain riders can walk over from the station in a few minutes. Afterward, stroll historic Murphy Avenue for coffee or dessert, or visit the Sunnyvale Heritage Park Museum’s orchard history exhibits.
