Ramnagar Fort is an 18th-century fortress on the eastern bank of the Ganges in Varanasi, built by Maharaja Balwant Singh as the residence of the Kashi Naresh, whose descendants still live there today.
Built from red sandstone in a blend of Mughal and Rajput styles, the fort houses a museum with vintage cars, an armory of swords and antique firearms from Burma, Japan, and Africa, and historic manuscripts and royal costumes. Because the current king still resides here, only part of the fort is open to the public.
The fort sits opposite Tulsi Ghat and is best reached by boat across the river, with the palace museum open daily from 10am to 5pm.
