The Cathedral of Barcelona, formally La Seu, is the Gothic Quarter’s centerpiece church, built mainly between the 13th and 15th centuries on the site of earlier Roman and Visigothic structures. Its ornate facade, soaring interior, and cloister make it one of the city’s most visited religious landmarks.
The cloister is the cathedral’s most beloved feature, a tranquil courtyard where a pond is home to 13 white geese, symbolizing the 13 years Santa Eulalia lived before her martyrdom. Beyond the main nave, visitors can explore the Chapter House Museum, the Holy Christ of Lepanto Chapel with its leaning crucifix, and, for an additional fee, rooftop terraces with views over the Gothic Quarter toward the Sagrada Família.
The cathedral is open roughly 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM on weekdays, with shorter hours on weekends, and can also be visited free of charge outside standard tourist hours. Modest dress covering shoulders and knees is required for entry.
