Piazza del Duomo is the historic heart of Florence, home to the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, its famous red-tiled dome, the Baptistery of St. John, and Giotto’s bell tower. The square is one of Italy’s finest examples of Gothic and Renaissance architecture assembled in a single space, and remains the city’s most visited landmark complex.
Highlights include Brunelleschi’s dome, which can be climbed for sweeping views over Florence; the Baptistery’s famous bronze doors, including Ghiberti’s “Gates of Paradise”; and the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, which houses original sculptures and artifacts from the cathedral complex.
Arrive a few minutes before opening to beat the tour groups, since ticket queues can stretch 60 to 90 minutes between April and October, especially from 10 AM to 1 PM. Set aside three to four hours to see the piazza’s full complex of sights.
