Nahargarh Fort was built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II as part of Jaipur’s defensive ring alongside Amber Fort and Jaigarh Fort, perched on the Aravalli hills overlooking the Pink City. Its name means “abode of tigers,” and though it never saw major battles, it served as a royal retreat and summer palace, most notably housing the Madhavendra Bhawan, a palace with separate apartments for the king and his queens.
The fort is widely regarded as Jaipur’s best sunset viewpoint, with sweeping views across the city from its hilltop ramparts. A modern glass-enclosed patio near the entrance offers a wind-protected 360-degree lookout that’s popular for photography.
The fort is open from 10 AM to 5:30 PM, and reaching it by auto or taxi from the city takes 30-40 minutes on a winding road. Winter (November to February) is the most comfortable season to visit, and arriving by mid-afternoon secures a good spot for sunset.
