Castelo de São Jorge crowns the highest hill in Lisbon’s Alfama district, a medieval fortress with roots stretching back to at least the 8th century BC, later fortified by the Moors and captured by King Afonso Henriques in the 1147 Siege of Lisbon.
Inside the walls, visitors can climb ancient towers, explore an archaeological site, and visit the Tower of Ulysses, whose camera obscura projects a live 360-degree view of the city. Peacocks roam the shaded gardens planted with olive and cork oak trees.
Plan for one and a half to three hours to see the walls, museum, and viewpoints over the Tagus River and Lisbon’s historic center, and wear sturdy shoes for the cobblestone paths.
