The Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum is one of Madrid’s essential art stops, forming the third point of the city’s “Golden Triangle” alongside the Prado and the Reina Sofía. It holds more than 1,000 works spanning eight centuries, moving from Italian Gothic panels and Old Masters through Impressionism, Fauvism, Expressionism, and 20th-century American painting in a single collection assembled largely by one family.
The permanent collection is organized chronologically across three floors, so most visitors start at the top and work their way down through the centuries. Highlights include works by Titian, Caravaggio, Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, Renoir, Kandinsky, and Rothko, plus a wing devoted to Baroness Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza’s own acquisitions.
The museum sits directly across from the Prado on Paseo del Prado, making it easy to combine with a broader museum day. An “Art Pass” covering all three Golden Triangle museums is available for visitors planning to see more than one.
