The Royal Alcázar of Seville is one of the oldest royal palaces still in use in Europe, its origins dating to an Umayyad fortress built around 913-914 AD and later expanded by Christian monarchs into a complex blending Islamic, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. Highlights include the Patio de las Doncellas, known for its reflecting pool and intricate Mudéjar plasterwork, and the Ambassador’s Hall, the palace’s grandest reception room.

The Alcázar’s gardens spread across more than 70,000 square meters and hold over 20,000 plants representing 187-plus species, making them among the most romantic green spaces in Seville and worth a couple of hours on their own. The palace continues to host official events for the Spanish royal family, giving it a living history alongside its status as a major attraction.

Opening hours run 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. from April through September and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. the rest of the year, with closures on January 1 and 6, Good Friday, and December 25. Plan on two to three hours to see the palace interiors and gardens without rushing, and aim for spring or fall for the mildest weather.
