Rynek Główny, Kraków’s Main Market Square, was laid out in 1257 as part of the city’s rebuilding after the Mongol invasion of 1241, making it one of the largest and oldest medieval town squares in Europe at roughly 40,000 square meters. It remains the historic and social heart of the city, and along with the rest of Kraków’s Old Town, it holds UNESCO World Heritage status.
At its center stands the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), a former trading hall for cloth merchants that now houses stalls of local handicrafts and the Sukiennice Museum of 19th-century Polish art. Nearby, the 14th-century Town Hall Tower offers panoramic views, while the Gothic twin towers of St. Mary’s Basilica are famous for the hourly trumpet call, the Hejnał Mariacki, played live from the taller spire. Beneath the square, the Rynek Underground Museum reveals medieval market stalls and artifacts uncovered by archaeologists.
The square is busiest from late morning to late afternoon, especially on weekends, so an early visit offers the best light and fewest crowds among its many cafés, restaurants, and souvenir stalls.
