El Retiro Park is a 125-hectare green oasis in central Madrid and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to more than 15,000 trees, formal gardens, and one of the city’s most beloved gathering spots. Built originally as royal grounds in the 17th century, it opened to the public in the late 19th century and remains free to enter.

Highlights include the Palacio de Cristal, a glass-and-iron pavilion built for an 1887 exhibition; the Estanque Grande boating lake, where rowboats can be rented for around €6-8 for 45 minutes; the Rosaleda rose garden, in full bloom from May to June; and the dramatic Fallen Angel statue, said to sit at exactly 666 meters above sea level. The newly restored Monkey Pit and the Andalusian-style Jardines de Cecilio Rodríguez add further variety to the grounds.

The park is open from 6 AM to midnight in spring and summer, and 6 AM to 10 PM in autumn and winter. A quick visit covers the main lake and Crystal Palace in 1-2 hours, while a full exploration of the gardens and hidden corners can fill half a day.
