The Angel of Independence is a 36-meter victory column on Mexico City’s grand Paseo de la Reforma, built in 1910 under President Porfirio Díaz to mark the centennial of Mexico’s War of Independence. Architect Antonio Rivas Mercado designed the steel-and-quarried-stone column, later converted into a mausoleum honoring key independence heroes.

At its summit stands a gilded bronze angel modeled on the Greek goddess Nike, holding a laurel wreath of victory and a broken chain symbolizing freedom, while bronze figures at the base represent law, war, justice, and peace. An eternal flame added in 1929 honors the heroes interred within.

The monument has become both a celebratory gathering point and a symbol of protest in the city. A limited, permit-based climb of roughly 200 steps leads to a small viewing platform, though most visitors simply admire the column from the plaza below.
