Parque La Carolina is Quito’s most-visited green space, a 64-hectare park in the Iñaquito district donated to the city in 1939 from the former Hacienda La Carolina. It functions as the capital’s central recreation hub, filling with joggers, cyclists, and families especially on weekends.
The park’s standout attraction is the Jardín Botánico de Quito, home to native páramo, cloud forest, and wetland habitats along with an orchid greenhouse and an Amazonian pavilion. Families also gravitate to the Vivarium’s reptile exhibits and the Museo Ecuatoriano de Ciencias Naturales, while paddleboats on the park’s lagoon and a network of bike paths round out the offerings.
Most visitors spend 2 to 3 hours here, longer if combining a walk with the botanical garden or natural history museum. Weekdays tend to be quieter, with organized fitness classes like yoga and running groups filling the paths in the mornings.
