The Atomic Bomb Dome, or Genbaku Dome, is the skeletal ruin of Hiroshima’s former Industrial Promotion Hall, preserved as it stood after the 1945 atomic bombing and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The structure itself cannot be entered, but the surrounding Peace Memorial Park grounds are open around the clock and free to view.
The adjacent Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum keeps seasonal hours, generally 7:30am to 6pm or 7pm depending on the month, with extended hours in August around the August 6 anniversary. Museum admission costs a modest 200 yen for adults.
Most visitors pair the Dome with a walk through Peace Memorial Park to see the Children’s Peace Monument and the Flame of Peace before or after touring the museum, making a half-day itinerary common.
